Best Two-Way Radio Earpieces and Headsets, and Which Ones Fit Your Radio

A two-way radio and a headset solve problems a radio alone can't. On the deer stand, a call from the speaker can give you away. On the chairlift, you can't hear the radio in your pocket over the wind, and you don't want to pull your gloves off to find it. On the tractor, the engine drowns out the speaker. In the truck, the radio slides around on the seat. An earpiece or a speaker-mic fixes each of those.

The catch is that radio plugs aren't universal. Motorola, Midland, Kenwood-style K1 radios and Rocky Talkie's Expedition Radio each use their own connector, and an earpiece that doesn't fit is worth nothing. So this page starts with a fit table built only from what each accessory maker says its product fits. Find your radio, then pick by job. (Still choosing the radio itself? Which headset fits my radio?

Every entry below comes from the accessory maker's own fit list or the radio maker's spec page. If a maker doesn't name your radio, we don't either.

Know your plug

• Motorola Talkabout jack. A single plug; Motorola's T470 datasheet lists it as a 2.5 mm headset jack (Motorola). Buy Motorola's Talkabout accessories and check the chart for your series.
• Midland dual-pin. Midland's own two-pin plug. Midland lists its accessories for its own radios and names no other brand, so don't assume a Midland headset fits a K1 radio, or the reverse.
• K1 (Kenwood-style two-pin). Two plugs side by side; Rocky Talkie lists its K1 headset as “K1 dual-pin 3.5 mm / 2.5 mm.” It's on the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio, the BTECH GMRS-V2 (BTECH), the Wouxun KG-935G Plus (dealer listing) and the Radioddity GM-30 (Radioddity). Rocky Talkie says its K1 headset is “compatible with any radio with K1 connector,” and BTECH says the QHM22 fits “All radios with the 2-pin K1 type connector.”
• Rocky Talkie M3. The Expedition Radio's waterproof port. Only Rocky Talkie's M3 accessories fit it, and the Mountain Radio's K1 accessories don't (Rocky Talkie).

How we picked

We scored every accessory on the headset rubric published on our How We Rank page: connector fit 30% (the plug and what the maker says it fits), hearing and mic in the field 25%, comfort and quiet use 20%, durability 15% (cable, PTT build and warranty as published) and value 10%. Scores come from the makers' pages and charts, not from wearing them. The order follows the score, but the only ranking that matters is the one in the fit table: the best earpiece for your radio is the best one that plugs into it.

1. Rocky Talkie Acoustic Headset for Mountain Radio

The best-specified earpiece here, and the one to get for any K1 radio. It's a surveillance-style headset with an in-line driver, a braided acoustic tube and a cable-mounted push-to-talk button and mic. Rocky Talkie rates it IP56, uses an aramid fiber-reinforced 43-inch cable, puts the weight at 1 ounce, includes a fit kit with sport wings and two eartip sizes, and backs it for 3 years of personal use (Rocky Talkie). It's sold one per box. Skip it for the Expedition Radio, which takes M3.

2. Rocky Talkie Waterproof Hand Mic for Mountain Radio

The skier's and climber's speaker-mic. It's IP67 and submersible to 1 meter, glove-friendly, with a wind-noise-reducing housing, an 80-inch coil cord, a 360-degree steel gator clip and a K1 plug (Rocky Talkie). The radio stays warm in your jacket while you talk at your shoulder. Remember the Mountain Radio itself is IP56, so the pair isn't submersible together, and every call plays out loud.

3. Rocky Talkie Waterproof Hand Mic for Expedition Radio

The mic built for the Expedition Radio's M3 port, with push-to-talk, volume and A/B dual-channel buttons at your shoulder. Rocky Talkie says that when it's connected, both the radio and the mic can be submerged to 1 meter (Rocky Talkie). It's the only pick here for that radio, and it fits nothing else.

4. BTECH QHM07 Surveillance Earpiece and Microphone Kit

The low-cost K1 earpiece. The clear acoustic coil tube rotates and locks in, there's an in-line PTT and mic with stainless clips, and the kit includes an in-ear insert plus left and right open-ear earmolds (BTECH). BTECH markets it as a premium noise-canceling earpiece but publishes no noise-reduction figure, and it lists no weather rating or warranty length. For a BTECH GMRS-V2 on a budget, it's the obvious match.

5. Midland AVPH3 Transparent In-Ear Headset (2-pack)

Two clear-tube earpieces in one pack, one for each radio of a Midland 2-pack, with a push-to-talk option and a VOX option. Midland says they fit every Midland FRS and GMRS radio except the X-Talker T10, which has no jack (Midland). This is the one for two hunters on a Midland pair. Midland publishes no cable, weather or warranty details.

6. BTECH QHM22 Heavy Duty Speaker Mic

An IP54 shoulder speaker-mic with an impact-resistant case, an 8-position stainless lapel clip and a K1 plug. Its best detail is a built-in 3.5 mm earphone jack, so you can add a listen-only earpiece when you're on the tractor or in a loud shop and still key up at your shoulder (BTECH). BTECH doesn't list its own GMRS-PRO, or any Midland or Motorola radio, and states no warranty length.

7. Motorola 53727 Earbud with Push-to-Talk Microphone

The safe choice for Talkabout families. Motorola's 2025 chart checks it for the T800, T600, T470, T380 and T210/T270 series, and not for the T110 (Motorola). The earbud sits in your ear and the small PTT mic clips to your collar. It's push-to-talk only in Motorola's listing; Motorola sells its hands-free VOX headsets as separate parts. No cable, weather or warranty details are published.

8. Midland AVPH8 Acoustic Throat Mic Headset

A throat mic picks up your voice through vibration sensors at your throat, and calls play through an in-ear acoustic tube. An inline switch sets VOX or push-to-talk. Midland's written fit list covers the GXT1000, GXT1030 and GXT1050, a long run of X-Talkers from the T31 to the T295, and its LXT, XT and CXT radios (Midland). GXT67 PRO and GXT3000 owners should confirm with Midland first. It's one headset per box.

9. Midland AVPH10 Universal Shoulder Speaker Mic

A plain, heavy-duty speaker-mic that Midland says works with all its FRS and GMRS handhelds, with a 360-degree rotating clip (Midland). It's the one to clip to a seatbelt or a vest so the radio can ride in a door pocket. Calls play out loud, Midland lists no earphone jack, and the warranty is 90 days.

The deer stand

Two things keep a stand quiet: calls that go into your ear instead of the air, and a way to answer without moving. A clear-tube earpiece handles the first. For the second, whisper into a push-to-talk earpiece, or let VOX key the radio when you speak. Several Midland GXT radios list whisper, silent and vibrate modes, which pair well with the AVPH3. The chairlift and the skin track

On snow, a speaker-mic beats an earpiece for most people: it works with gloves and a helmet, and the radio stays warm inside your jacket. The Rocky Talkie hand mics are the only accessories here with a published IP67 rating and a wind-noise feature. Engine noise is the problem, so get the sound into your ear. A surveillance earpiece (AVPH3 for Midland, QHM07 for K1) is the simple fix. The QHM22's earphone jack gives you both: a shoulder PTT you can find with work gloves on, and the audio in your ear. The truck

A speaker-mic on your shoulder or seatbelt keeps the handheld off the dash. If you spend real time in a vehicle, though, consider a mobile radio with its own hand mic and a roof antenna; the FCC allows GMRS mobile stations far more power than a handheld is typically rated at. Bluetooth instead of a wire

A few radios skip the wire. Motorola says the T802 and T803 pair with Bluetooth 5.2 audio accessories through its TALKABOUT app (Motorola). BTECH lists Bluetooth HFP headset support on the GMRS-PRO (BTECH), and Garmin lists Bluetooth on the Rino 750. We haven't ranked any Bluetooth headsets because we couldn't find a maker-published list of specific models that work with these radios, and a fit we can't cite is a fit we won't promise.

What to look for in a two-way radio headset

1. Your radio on the maker's fit list. Not the plug type alone, the model. Motorola's chart skips the T110 series; Midland's AVPH8 list skips the GXT67 PRO and GXT3000.
2. The right style for the job. A surveillance tube or earbud keeps calls private. A throat mic picks up your voice through vibration sensors at the throat instead of an open mic. A speaker-mic is easiest with gloves but plays calls out loud.
3. Push-to-talk or VOX. The AVPH3 offers both, the AVPH8 has an inline switch, and the Motorola 53727 is push-to-talk. Many radios also have their own VOX setting.
4. What the accessory does to your radio's water rating. Midland says its GXT1000, GXT1050 and GXT3000 no longer meet their JIS4 rating with an accessory plugged in (GXT1000 spec sheet), and the GXT67 PRO's IP67 needs its jack cover tightened (Midland). Rocky Talkie's M3 connection is the exception: radio and mic stay submersible together.
5. A cable and warranty you can read. Rocky Talkie publishes cable materials and a 3-year personal-use warranty. Midland's AVPH10 has 90 days. Several makers publish nothing.
6. How many come in the box. The AVPH3 is a pair. Everything else here is one per box.

If Amazon doesn't list it

The buttons on this page search Amazon for the exact model named on the card. Radio accessories come and go on Amazon, though, and maker-made pieces aren't always there. As general advice: if Amazon doesn't list a Rocky Talkie accessory, Rocky Talkie sells it direct on its own site, and Midland and BTECH sell theirs direct as well. Motorola sells its Talkabout accessories through retailers rather than direct. Whatever you buy, match the exact part number, not a lookalike.

Mistakes to avoid

• Buying by plug shape. Two pins isn't enough: Midland dual-pin and K1 are different families. Check the model list.
• Buying a headset for a Midland T10. It has no jack.
• Expecting more range. An earpiece changes how you hear and talk, not how far the radio reaches.
• Running VOX too sensitive outdoors. Wind and footsteps will key the radio and block the channel for everyone. Start low.
• Taking a plugged-in Midland into the rain. The splash rating doesn't hold with an accessory in the jack.
